Spinal Muscular Atrophy – Navigating Spinal Muscular Atrophy Risk in Pregnancy – Clinical and Personal Perspectives
This two-part symposium will explore the rapidly evolving landscape of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) diagnosis and treatment in Australia, with a focus on the role of prenatal genetic testing and the experiences of families navigating this complex journey.
Part 1: A Family’s Journey – Insights from Lived Experience
In the first session, we will hear directly from Carolyn and Steve, a couple whose experience with SMA has corresponded with a period of rapid change in both the diagnosis and treatment of this devastating condition. In this 20 minute interview, Carolyn and Steve will share their personal story – from the moment they first encountered SMA through the diagnosis of their first child, Hannah, in 2014, through to their prenatal SMA diagnosis and eventual treatment of their third child, John. Their reflections will offer invaluable insights into what they found supportive, what challenges they encountered, and what healthcare professionals can learn from their experience. This session will provide a deeply human perspective on the impact of early diagnosis and intervention, complementing the clinical discussion with lived experience.
Part 2: Clinical Advances and the Role of the Obstetrician
Dr. Renuka Sekar, a specialist obstetrician in maternal and fetal medicine, will lead a 30-minute educational session on the latest developments in SMA diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Sekar will provide an overview of the genetic and clinical basis of SMA, tracing the evolution of diagnostic tools and the introduction of transformative therapies that have significantly improved outcomes for affected infants. A key focus will be the integration of RGCS into routine prenatal care in Australia, now widely accessible through Medicare-funded programs. Dr. Sekar will highlight the critical role of obstetricians in supporting couples who receive an elevated fetal risk result, offering guidance on counselling, decision-making, and multidisciplinary care coordination. This session will equip clinicians with the knowledge and sensitivity needed to support families through these pivotal moments.
